How to use this tool
A tip is an amount added to a bill to reward service. Practices vary widely by region and by venue — sometimes service is already included, sometimes it's left to the customer's discretion. The quick buttons cover the usual 5-25 % range and the custom field accepts any value. The tool also splits the total fairly among several people — handy for group bills.
Concrete examples
- $50 × 10 % = $5 tip, $55 total
- $120 × 20 % = $24 tip, $144 total
- $80 total split by 4 = $20 each
Frequently asked questions
- How do I pick a percentage?
- It depends on the country, the type of venue and how you rate the service. The 5, 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25 % buttons cover the most common rates; the custom field accepts any value.
- Tip on pre-tax or total?
- The tool simply applies the percentage to whatever amount you type in. Enter the figure you want to base the calculation on (before or after tax, up to you).
